About Gatesgarth

Gatesgarth is a residential care home in Cockermouth in Cumberland. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people with physical disabilities and younger adults, and we offer respite stays for people who usually live elsewhere. We run this as a home that people live in rather than a service they receive. Rooms belong to the people in them and get arranged accordingly. The weekly shop is decided by the people who will eat it. Weekend plans are made by whoever is going. We ask rather than assume, and being told no is a perfectly good answer. Where a physical disability affects how somebody gets about, we design around the person rather than expecting them to accommodate the building, and we are careful that help with one task does not quietly become help with everything. Much of the rest of our work is about widening what is possible. Cooking something you actually want. Getting confident with money. Managing a journey into town alone. Keeping a course, a job or a friendship going. Progress can be slow and can go backwards, and our part is to keep the chance open without pressure. Cockermouth and the country around it give people plenty of reason to get out, and we make use of it. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our last inspection, and we keep asking the people living here what should change.
