About Franklin Avenue
Franklin Avenue is a residential care home in Bedford supporting adults with learning disabilities, older people, and people with loss of sight or hearing. This is the home of the people who live in it, and we try to behave like people who are there to help rather than people who are in charge. People arrange their own rooms, take part in the shopping and cooking as much as they want to, and decide how their days are spent. We support people to get out to clubs, appointments, activities and family. Communication gets particular attention here, and where somebody has loss of sight or hearing alongside a learning disability the ordinary assumptions stop holding. You cannot announce yourself from a doorway and expect to be heard. So we use signing, touch, objects of reference, symbols, routine and consistency, whatever suits the individual, and we treat that as the central task rather than a preliminary to it. Short respite stays are available alongside permanent places, which can give a family carer a break or let somebody try the house first. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please contact us if you would like to visit.
