Most of the people we support are older adults, and we also work with younger adults, with people living with physical disabilities, and with people who have lost some of their sight or hearing. Dementia care is a significant part of what we do. Home is often the best possible setting for someone living with dementia, because the rooms are already understood and the routines are already in place. Our job is to support those routines rather than impose new ones, and to notice early when the level of help needs to change. Practically, we help with washing and dressing, with medication, with preparing food and making sure it is actually eaten, with shopping and with keeping the house in reasonable order. We also spend time simply talking to people, which for someone living alone can be the most valuable part of the visit. Birmingham is a big city and we cover a good part of it, but we plan rotas so that carers are not sprinting between calls. A rushed visit helps nobody.
